Here we are at the end of another year, and what a year it's been...unfortunately, mostly in terrible ways. While I expected things in the US to be bad, it was still disturbing to see many of my worst fears come true and even be exceeded in some ways, as this administration comes up with idiotic, destructive and downright evil things to do that hadn't occurred to me. There have been some bursts of good news, such as the election results in November along with the rest of things that have gone wrong for the MAGA crowd in the last couple of months. But overall it's been bad, and it's going to take a very long time to repair the damage, if it can be repaired at all.
Things in other places may not have gone downhill quite as rapidly as in the US (though no place has been untouched by the effects of the ongoing disaster in the US), but there's still been a lot of bad news. Things remain terrible in places like Sudan and Gaza. While the results of a few national elections have been relatively good, others have been awful, such as those in Honduras and Chile. Here in Taiwan, the KMT and TPP have used their control of the legislature to pass some MAGA-like measures, and voters failed to remove any of their legislators in the recall elections a few months ago. The world as a whole, despite some good news regarding growing use of renewable energy, has continued down the road to environmental disaster, thanks in large part to the US (again, no one is untouched by the MAGA plague). But at least we got an excellent show about fighting an authoritarian government in Andor, though its similarities to real life were sometimes a bit disturbing.
There is, of course, a great deal more that could be said about all that has happened this year, but I will leave that to others, at least for now. I will just conclude with the hope that next year turns out much better.
